Everything Gumroad charges in 2026
There is one plan. No tiers, no volume discounts, no way to negotiate the rate down. The paid plans that used to lower the commission were removed in 2023.
| Charge | Rate | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee, direct | 10% + $0.50 | Buyer arrives from your link, site or social |
| Platform fee, Discover | 30% flat | Buyer finds you through Gumroad's marketplace — processing included |
| Card processing | about 2.9% + $0.30 | Charged separately on top of the direct fee |
| PayPal | about 3.49% + $0.49 | Instead of card processing, when the buyer pays by PayPal |
| Monthly subscription | $0 | Never — there is no monthly cost |
| Merchant of record | $0 extra | Since January 2025, VAT, GST and sales tax are collected and remitted for you |
| Refunds | Fee not returned | Gumroad keeps 10% + $0.50 on a fully refunded order |
| International payouts | Varies | PayPal receiving fees and currency conversion spread, if you are paid that way |
Figures taken from Gumroad's public pricing and fee help pages, plus Stripe and PayPal's published US rates, checked July 2026. Your real rate moves with card type, buyer country and payout method.
Your effective rate by price point
The flat $0.50 is what makes the headline misleading. It is a rounding error on a $297 product and a tax on a $19 one.
| Price | Gumroad fees | Effective rate | You keep | On Whop you keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $19 | $3.25 | 17.1% | $15.75 | $17.62 |
| $50 | $7.25 | 14.5% | $42.75 | $46.85 |
| $97 | $13.31 | 13.7% | $83.69 | $91.17 |
| $297 | $39.11 | 13.2% | $257.89 | $279.77 |
Gumroad column: 10% + $0.50 platform fee plus 2.9% + $0.30 card processing. Whop column: 3% platform fee on a gated sale plus 2.7% + $0.30 processing. Domestic cards, direct traffic on both sides.
What the 10% costs you over a year
Same assumption throughout: a $50 product, direct sales, US cards.
| Monthly revenue | Sales/month | Gumroad fees per year | Whop fees per year | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 20 | $1,740 | $756 | $984 |
| $5,000 | 100 | $8,700 | $3,780 | $4,920 |
| $10,000 | 200 | $17,400 | $7,560 | $9,840 |
| $25,000 | 500 | $43,500 | $18,900 | $24,600 |
The two charges that surprise people
Discover is 30%, not 10%
If a buyer discovers your product inside Gumroad's marketplace rather than arriving from your own link, the fee is a flat 30% with processing included. On a $50 product that is $15 against $7.25 for the same sale sent by your own audience.
It is not a scam — you are buying traffic. But it is the most expensive customer-acquisition channel on any major creator platform, and it is easy to end up relying on it without noticing the blended rate it creates.
Refunds are one-directional
Refund a $297 sale in full and you return $297 to the buyer while Gumroad keeps $30.20. Your net position on that order is negative. Most modern processors and merchants of record return the percentage fee, or charge a small flat refund fee instead.
If you run a money-back guarantee on high-ticket products, model your refund rate against this before you set your price.
Where to go from here
Run your own numbers
Take your average order value and your monthly sales count, apply 10% + $0.50 against 3% + 2.7%, and the decision usually makes itself. Opening a Whop to test it is free.
