What one $50 sale actually costs you
Headline rates hide the stack. Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 is charged before card processing, which is billed separately at roughly 2.9% + $0.30. Here is what leaves your pocket on a single $50 sale on each platform.
Gumroad's Discover rate is 30% flat with processing included, so a sale that Gumroad's own marketplace sends you costs nearly five times what the same sale costs on Whop's marketplace — Whop removed its 30% marketplace commission in May 2025, so marketplace sales there are billed at the same rate as direct ones.
Nine Gumroad alternatives, ranked by take-home

Flat-fee platforms only beat percentage platforms once your revenue clears the subscription. At $29/month, Sellfy pays for itself against Gumroad at roughly $400/month in sales. Below that, a percentage model is cheaper. Rates verified July 2026 — confirm on each platform's own pricing page before switching.
Six reasons the 10% stops making sense
The fee scales with your success
10% of $500 is annoying. 10% of $50,000 is a salary. There is no volume tier, no cap and no discount — Gumroad removed its cheaper paid plans in 2023 and the flat 10% has been the only option since.
Refunds still cost you
Issue a full refund and Gumroad keeps its 10% + $0.50. If you sell high-ticket products with a money-back guarantee, every refund is a straight loss on top of the reversed sale. Most competitors return at least part of the fee.
Discover costs 30%
Sales that arrive through Gumroad's own marketplace are billed at a flat 30%. On a $50 product that is $15 instead of $7.25 — the traffic is real, but it is the most expensive traffic in the category.
No community or access control
Gumroad sells files and licences. It does not gate a Discord server, a Telegram group, a TradingView script or a recurring members area. If your product is access rather than a download, you are on the wrong tool.
You never touch the payment flow
You do not connect your own processor, you do not get a processor dashboard, and payouts arrive on Gumroad's schedule. Disputes and refunds run entirely through their system.
The $0.50 punishes cheap products
On a $19 product the flat $0.50 turns a 10% fee into 12.6% before processing, and 17.1% all in. Low-ticket catalogues get hit hardest by the part of the fee nobody mentions.
Where Gumroad is still the right answer
A comparison that only lists the downsides is not worth reading. Three cases where staying put is the correct decision:
You sell almost nothing yet
10% of $0 is $0. If you are validating an idea, a percentage model with no monthly fee is the right shape and Gumroad's setup is genuinely the fastest in the category.
You want tax handled and forgotten
Gumroad has been a full merchant of record since January 2025, so VAT, GST and US sales tax are calculated, collected and remitted for you worldwide at no extra fee. That is real work you do not have to do.
Your buyers already trust the checkout
Gumroad's checkout is recognised. For a cold audience buying a $12 template, brand familiarity converts — and a few points of conversion can outrun a few points of fees.
Why Whop tops the list for most switchers
Whop is free to open, charges a 3% platform fee on sales that use its access-control automations, and processes cards at 2.7% + $0.30 — roughly 5.7% + $0.30 all in on a typical gated sale, against Gumroad's 14.5% effective on a $50 product.
Where it beats Gumroad
- 3% platform fee instead of 10%, with no monthly subscription
- Marketplace sales are billed at the normal rate — the 30% Discover-style commission was removed in May 2025
- Gates paid Discord and Telegram access, courses, licence keys and recurring memberships natively
- Buyer marketplace with real discovery traffic; Whop reported over $400M paid out to creators in 2025
- Built-in affiliate program so other people can sell your product for you
Where it does not
- The audience skews young and hustle-oriented — trading, reselling, crypto, betting, agency. A knitting-pattern PDF will not find buyers there
- Payouts carry their own fees: about $2.50 for next-day ACH, and instant payouts cost materially more
- International cards add roughly 1.5%, plus about 1% again if currency conversion is needed
- Tax handling is not the same automatic merchant-of-record arrangement Gumroad gives you
- It is not a course platform — no quizzes, certificates or graded assignments
If you do not use any access automations, the 3% platform fee does not apply and a plain digital download is billed at processing only. Check your own use case against Whop's published fee documentation before you move.
